Circle Claims U.S. Blockchain Patent Lead With IBM Portfolio Acquisition

Circle bought roughly 1,000 IBM blockchain patents, becoming the top U.S. holder. The seller is reportedly also a backer of Open USD, a stablecoin consortium built to compete with Circle’s own USDC.

Circle now holds more U.S. blockchain patents than any other company: nearly 1,000 issued patents and 680-plus patent families, acquired from IBM, which held the top spot alone as recently as a December 2025 analysis crediting it with roughly 790, more than double Bank of America’s distant-second count of around 200.

Circle reportedly held no blockchain patents before its first, granted in December 2023.

Why it matters

Circle’s official line is that the IP “advances our mission.” Less discussed is who sold it. IBM is reportedly one of 140-plus backers of Open USD, the consortium stablecoin built to compete with USDC’s reserve-income model, a link not yet confirmed against Open Standard’s own official partner list. If that reporting holds, the deal reads as more than an IP purchase: it would also move a large blockchain-patent estate out of the hands of a company with a stake in a USDC competitor. Neither company has stated that as a motive.

The big picture

Circle’s stock reportedly dropped more than 17% the day Open USD launched, on June 30. On Monday, the day the patent deal was announced, CRCL closed at $65.67, up 5.31% ($3.31) from Friday’s close. The deal lands nine days ahead of Circle’s August 5 Q2 earnings report, the first real test of how the market weighs OUSD’s threat against Circle’s actual numbers.

Most of the acquired patents cover banking, insurance, supply-chain verification and secure cloud operations, categories that map onto Circle’s existing stack (USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc) rather than opening new product territory. USDC’s market cap sits at $72.44 billion currently, the base the deal is meant to defend.

“Intellectual property is critical to advancing our mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure,” said Sarah Wilson, Circle’s general counsel and corporate secretary.

That’s the framing Circle has offered publicly.

In July, Standard Chartered partnered with Circle to integrate USDC minting and redemption services, streamlining institutional access to regulated stablecoin settlement.

Later the same month, Circle received federal approval to launch a regulated digital asset trust bank in the United States, expanding its custody and digital asset infrastructure.  The approval strengthens Circle’s position in compliant digital finance while supporting its long-term institutional strategy. Together, these developments highlight Circle’s continued expansion across regulated payments, banking infrastructure, and blockchain-based financial services.

What’s next

Price undisclosed. Whether IBM retains any licensing or enforcement rights hasn’t been addressed by either company. The IBM/Open USD connection is corroborated by two secondary sources but not yet confirmed against Open Standard’s own official backer list. Treat it as directional until that check is done. August 5 earnings is the next point where this gets tested against Circle’s actual financials rather than deal optics.

FAQ

1. How much did Circle pay?
Undisclosed.

2. Does IBM keep any rights to the patents?
Not addressed by either company, an open question, not yet answered.
