HYPE Hits a Record High as Hyperliquid Adds Borrowing

  • HYPE, Hyperliquid’s native token, hit an all-time high above $90
  • The move coincided with Hyperliquid launching manual borrowing
  • HYPE’s rise pushed it into the top eight cryptocurrencies by market cap

HYPE, the native token of the Hyperliquid exchange, hit an all-time high above $90 this week, the same day Hyperliquid launched manual borrowing for its users. The new feature lets traders borrow directly against their existing positions on the exchange, giving them a way to access liquidity without closing out a trade, rather than relying solely on the exchange’s existing margin mechanics.

Hyperliquid has built its position over the past two years as one of the largest decentralized perpetuals exchanges by trading volume, competing directly with both centralized platforms and other on-chain derivatives venues. Unlike many competitors, Hyperliquid runs its own purpose-built blockchain rather than operating as an application on top of an existing chain, an architecture choice that has let it offer faster execution and lower fees than most on-chain alternatives, closing much of the performance gap that has historically favored centralized exchanges.

A meaningful share of HYPE’s value proposition comes from the exchange’s fee structure, which directs a portion of trading revenue toward buying back and burning HYPE tokens, reducing the circulating supply over time. That mechanism ties the token’s value directly to the exchange’s trading volume, which means new features that drive more activity onto the platform, such as this week’s borrowing launch, tend to feed through into token price more directly than they would for exchanges without a similar buyback structure.

The token’s rise this week pushed HYPE into the top eight cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, a notable jump for a token that only launched in late 2024. The move reflects both the new borrowing feature and broader momentum in Hyperliquid’s trading volumes, which have remained among the highest of any perpetuals exchange, centralized or decentralized, through much of this year.

Manual borrowing also brings Hyperliquid a step closer to replicating a feature set that has long been standard on centralized exchanges, where traders can borrow against collateral to increase their position size without needing to bridge funds elsewhere first. Decentralized platforms have historically lagged centralized exchanges on this kind of capital-efficiency feature, partly because building on-chain lending markets that can be liquidated quickly and safely during periods of high volatility is technically harder than replicating the same feature on a centralized order book. Whether Hyperliquid can keep shipping features like this without a major security incident will likely be watched closely by competing decentralized exchanges considering similar products.
