IBM Links Digital Asset Haven to Swift’s Blockchain Ledger and Opens an On-Premises Beta for Banks

  • IBM connected Digital Asset Haven to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger through a new ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter
  • The adapter lets banks settle tokenized deposit transactions using standard ISO 20022 messages around the clock while keeping existing compliance processes intact
  • IBM also opened an on-premises beta of Digital Asset Haven, letting institutions run the platform inside their own IBM Z or LinuxONE data centers instead of a public cloud

IBM expanded its digital banking infrastructure with two linked announcements, connecting its Digital Asset Haven custody and tokenization platform to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger and opening an on-premises beta of the same platform, according to the company’s announcement. The Swift connection runs through a new ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter, letting financial institutions initiate and settle tokenized deposit transactions using the same standardized messaging format banks already use for conventional payments, rather than adopting a separate messaging protocol for blockchain-based transfers.

Swift’s shared ledger has been developed with more than 40 financial institutions and is currently being piloted by 17 first-mover banks, giving IBM’s adapter an existing network of participants to plug into rather than requiring a new ledger to be built from scratch. Because the adapter speaks ISO 20022, a bank can route tokenized deposit transactions through the same compliance, sanctions-screening, and reconciliation processes it already runs on traditional payment rails, without needing separate blockchain-specific workflows layered on top.

The on-premises beta addresses a different constraint: some banks are unwilling or unable to run digital asset custody in a public cloud environment for regulatory, security, or internal-policy reasons. The on-premises version of Digital Asset Haven lets an institution deploy the platform entirely within its own IBM Z or LinuxONE data center, with hardware-backed security through IBM Crypto Express hardware security modules, formal key-generation ceremonies, and cold storage support built for extremely high availability.

“The financial services industry is entering a new era where tokenized and traditional assets will need to move side by side,” said Tom McPherson, General Manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE. The pairing of the two announcements reflects that framing directly: the Swift adapter addresses how tokenized assets move between institutions, while the on-premises beta addresses where and how they are custodied once a bank holds them.

Both moves extend IBM’s existing push into digital asset infrastructure for regulated banks, building on Digital Asset Haven’s prior cloud-based deployment model. By offering both a standardized messaging bridge to an established interbank network and a self-hosted deployment option, IBM is positioning the platform to fit banks at different points on the spectrum from early blockchain pilots to full production deployment inside a bank’s own controlled infrastructure.
