What Binance's Expanded Proof of Reserves Actually Verifies, and What It Can't

  • Binance’s Proof of Reserves system uses a zero-knowledge proof combined with a Merkle tree structure to verify solvency claims without revealing individual customer balances
  • The expanded snapshot now covers 44 tokens, up from 10, but the proof confirms that reserves meet a certain threshold at a specific moment in time rather than continuously
  • The system verifies that the exchange holds enough of a given asset to cover customer liabilities as of the snapshot, not broader claims about the exchange’s overall financial health or future solvency

Binance’s latest recovery update, which expanded its Proof of Reserves snapshot from 10 tokens to 44, has drawn renewed attention to exactly what this kind of system can and cannot verify for users trying to assess an exchange’s financial health after a major security incident. The underlying mechanism combines two distinct pieces of cryptography: a Merkle tree, which lets every customer verify that their own individual account balance was included in the exchange’s total calculation without revealing anyone else’s balance, and a zero-knowledge proof, which lets the exchange prove it holds sufficient reserves to cover the sum of all those balances without disclosing the exact total holdings or wallet addresses involved.

In practice, a customer can check a cryptographic receipt tying their own balance into the broader Merkle tree structure, confirming that their funds were honestly accounted for in the exchange’s published total. Separately, the zero-knowledge proof allows outside observers to confirm that the exchange’s on-chain reserves meet or exceed the total customer liabilities reflected in that Merkle tree, all without the exchange needing to reveal its specific wallet addresses or exact balances, which could otherwise expose it to targeted attacks or competitive disadvantage.

What this system does not verify is equally important to understand. A Proof of Reserves snapshot is a point-in-time check, confirming solvency as of the specific moment the snapshot was taken, in this case November 4, 2026 at 00:00 UTC. It says nothing about whether the exchange was solvent an hour before or will remain solvent an hour after, since reserves and liabilities can shift immediately following the snapshot. It also does not verify the exchange’s broader financial health, such as outstanding debts, off-balance-sheet obligations, or the quality of its risk management practices more generally.

The expansion from 10 to 44 tokens represents a meaningful increase in the scope of what gets checked, since a narrower snapshot covering only an exchange’s largest assets could leave smaller token balances unverified even if the headline assets appear fully backed. A broader snapshot reduces, though does not eliminate, the possibility that an exchange could appear solvent in its most visible holdings while being short elsewhere.

Proof of Reserves systems have become a standard transparency tool across major exchanges since a wave of exchange collapses made reserve verification a priority for users, though their narrow, point-in-time nature means they function as one input among several for assessing an exchange’s trustworthiness rather than a complete guarantee. The underlying recovery update is posted on Binance’s own announcement page.
