Why BONK Is Being Delisted From Upbit: A $20M Hack and a Two-Month Review

Upbit's own delisting notice never names the $20 million BonkDAO treasury hack as the reason, breaking from how the exchange handled a similar case with UXLINK just months earlier.

Upbit will end trading support for Bonk (BONK) on September 7, 2026, at 15:00 KST. All open BONK/KRW and BONK/USDT orders will be canceled at that moment, the South Korean exchange said in a notice posted August 7. The decision closes out a review that started a month earlier. On July 7, 2026, a $20 million exploit of BonkDAO’s treasury pushed BONK’s price down more than 9% within hours and led Upbit to designate the token a trading-caution asset.

Withdrawals Close October 7: What Holders Need to Do

Withdrawals stay open for 30 days past the trading cutoff, until October 7, 2026. After that, deposits sent to Upbit BONK addresses won’t be credited, and the exchange said recovering misdirected transfers past the deadline involves a long wait. Upbit is also ending support for BONK-related airdrops, wallet upgrades, and hard forks going forward, the standard package of services an exchange retires when it drops a token.

How We Got Here: A $20M Hack, Then a Caution Flag

The timeline starts on July 7, 2026, when BonkDAO disclosed that an attacker had pushed through a malicious governance proposal and drained roughly $20 million worth of BONK from its treasury. The exact technical steps that let the proposal pass, whether it exploited a quorum threshold, a delegation flaw, or something else, haven’t been detailed publicly as of this writing. BonkDAO said it had notified law enforcement and was working to recover the funds and identify those responsible; no recovery has been confirmed.
The same day, Upbit designated BONK a trading-caution item, the exchange’s holding pattern for tokens it isn’t ready to delist outright but wants to flag for extra scrutiny, with a review window to decide whether the underlying problem gets fixed. It didn’t. Upbit’s termination notice says that after further review, the reasons behind the caution designation “remained unresolved.”

What Upbit’s Notice Doesn’t Say

That sentence does a lot of work without saying much. It’s boilerplate Upbit reuses across delistings, nearly identical to language the exchange used when it pulled UXLINK, a social app hit by an $11 million token-mint exploit, in November 2025. Upbit’s UXLINK caution notice, unlike BONK’s, named the cause directly:

“The occurrence of security incidents like hacking” and the issuer’s failure to disclose information properly.

BONK’s caution notice carried no stated reason at all, issued the very day BonkDAO disclosed its own hack.
Upbit’s notice doesn’t name the hack as the reason for the delisting, unlike its UXLINK notice, which cited a security incident directly. Whether the two are connected hasn’t been confirmed by Upbit.

BONK’s Price Is Already Feeling It

Source: CoinMarketCap
Metric Value
Daily low, Aug 7, 2026 $0.00000255 (lowest since Nov 2023)
Price at time of writing ~$0.00000264 (down ~7% in 24 hours)
1-month change -30.5%
DOGE / SHIB, same period Single-digit percentage losses

BONK missed the broader rally that lifted major assets in July entirely.

Still Trading Elsewhere: Will Bithumb and Coinone Follow?

The delisting doesn’t touch BONK outside Korea; the token still trades on exchanges including OKX. What it removes is access to Upbit’s order books, which function as South Korea’s deepest retail liquidity pool for a token like this one. Whether Bithumb or Coinone follow with their own termination notices is the open question the next few weeks will answer; neither has done so as of this writing.
