Inside the Unglamorous, Constant Job of Tuning a DeFi Protocol's Risk Parameters

  • Risk management firms like LlamaRisk and Gauntlet continuously adjust supply caps, borrow caps and interest-rate curves on protocols like Aave and Compound through a fast-track process
  • Aave’s Risk Steward system allows incremental parameter changes within pre-approved bounds without requiring a full governance vote for every individual adjustment
  • A single November 4, 2026 update touching nine blockchain deployments simultaneously raised caps on bitcoin-backed assets while cutting caps on several stablecoins

Behind the headline-grabbing governance proposals and emergency freezes that periodically make news, DeFi lending protocols run on a far less visible but constant stream of smaller parameter adjustments, carried out by dedicated risk management firms working under a fast-track process designed specifically to avoid the delay of a full governance vote for every routine change. On Aave, this system is formalized as the Risk Steward process, which allows approved risk managers like LlamaRisk to raise or lower caps and rates within pre-agreed bounds without putting each individual change to a DAO-wide vote.

A representative example came on November 4, 2026, when a single update from Aave’s risk stewards touched nine separate blockchain deployments at once, spanning Core, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, Mantle, Monad, Plasma, Polygon and X Layer. Within that one update, caps on bitcoin-backed assets like cbBTC and WBTC were raised, reflecting growing confidence in those markets’ liquidity and demand, while caps on several stablecoins, including a steep two-thirds cut to RLUSD’s supply cap, were simultaneously reduced, reflecting a more cautious stance toward those specific assets.

This kind of asymmetric adjustment, loosening limits on one asset category while tightening them on another within the same update, illustrates that risk management in DeFi is rarely a single, uniform policy applied evenly across a protocol. Instead, it reflects an ongoing, asset-by-asset and chain-by-chain assessment of utilization levels, liquidity depth, and perceived risk, updated frequently enough that a protocol’s risk posture can shift meaningfully within a single week.

The fast-track nature of this process exists because waiting for a full governance vote on every minor cap adjustment would make protocols far too slow to respond to real-time changes in market conditions, such as a reserve approaching its utilization ceiling or a stablecoin showing early signs of depegging stress. By contrast, more structural decisions, such as creating an entirely new isolated market or changing a protocol’s core architecture, still require the slower, more deliberative full governance process.

The sheer frequency and breadth of these routine adjustments, often spanning multiple chains and asset types in a single post, underscores how much ongoing operational work sits beneath the surface of a protocol that, to most users, simply appears to run automatically. The underlying parameter changes are posted on Aave’s own governance forum.
