  • Ripple Prime, the institutional arm built on Ripple’s $1.25 billion Hidden Road acquisition, launched a Delta One business on Thursday offering total return swaps across US-listed equities, indices and digital assets.
  • The unit says it runs no market-making or proprietary trading of its own, clearing and financing client swaps only, which it markets as a conflict-free alternative to how bank Delta One desks typically operate.
  • The launch follows a $275 million note sale this month and a BBB investment-grade rating from KBRA in April.

Ripple Prime opened a Delta One business on Thursday, giving institutional clients access to total return swaps across US-listed equities, stock indices and digital assets through a single counterparty.

“The launch of our Delta One business is an important development for Ripple Prime and a natural extension of the platform we’ve built,” said Noel Kimmel, President of Ripple Prime.

A total return swap lets a client take on the price exposure of a stock or index without owning the underlying shares, while Ripple Prime holds and finances the position on the other side. The new desk sits alongside Ripple Prime’s existing cross margining across FX, derivatives, fixed income and digital assets, with 24/7 access through one counterparty.

Ripple Prime says the desk is built without a trading book of its own. It clears and finances client swaps rather than warehousing exposure or running proprietary positions, a structure the company casts as a conflict-free alternative to how bank Delta One desks are typically built.

The Same Instrument Behind Archegos

Total return swaps are the same instrument at the center of the 2021 collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost global banks more than $10 billion, including a $2.9 billion loss disclosed by Nomura.

A study by the European Securities and Markets Authority found the swaps let Archegos build concentrated stock positions its banks never had to disclose, paired with margin requirements from those banks that proved too thin for the risk they were carrying.

Ripple Prime’s conflict-free pitch answers a different question than the one regulators raised about that failure. Not running a trading book removes an incentive problem: a bank could otherwise favor its own book over a client’s swap. It says nothing about how large a concentrated position Ripple Prime will let a client build, or how much collateral it will require to hold one. The broader expansion comes alongside attention around Ripple-funded nonprofit crypto adoption initiatives.

The Financial Backing Behind Ripple Prime’s Delta One Expansion

Ripple Prime says it holds more than $1 billion in regulatory net capital. It closed a $275 million private placement of senior unsecured notes this month, on top of a $200 million debt facility from Neuberger Specialty Finance secured earlier this year. In April, KBRA assigned the unit’s holding entities a BBB issuer rating, the kind of investment-grade credential pension funds, insurers and banks typically need before trading with a new counterparty without a special exception. Ripple’s broader regulatory expansion also includes its Ripple full MiCA license in Europe.

Ripple Prime is built on the $1.25 billion Hidden Road acquisition Ripple closed last October. Delta One is the latest addition to the platform after Hyperliquid access in February and EDX Markets integration in May. The expansion comes as Ripple develops other institutional products, including an RLUSD lending fund.

What actually determines whether Delta One repeats Archegos’s failure mode is position limits and margin terms. Neither has been made public yet.
