Vitalik Buterin pitches a mempool built from recursive proofs

  • EIP-8288, authored by Vitalik Buterin, proposes bundling pending transactions into recursive STARK proofs before they enter a block.
  • The goal is to lower the cost of quantum-resistant signatures and enable private account abstraction without breaking on-chain verifiability.
  • It targets a future Ethereum upgrade, tentatively named I-Star, arriving after the Hegota fork.

Vitalik Buterin has proposed a new way to handle Ethereum’s mempool, the holding area where transactions sit before miners or validators pack them into a block. EIP-8288 would aggregate the dependencies between pending transactions and wrap them in a recursive STARK proof, a type of cryptographic proof that lets a single check verify a whole batch of computation at once rather than checking each piece individually.

The practical payoff is twofold. Quantum-resistant signature schemes are typically far larger and more expensive to verify than the elliptic-curve signatures Ethereum uses today; folding them into a recursive proof structure could cut that cost meaningfully. The same structure also opens a path to private account abstraction, meaning a wallet’s internal logic and permissions could stay hidden while still being provably correct on-chain.

This is an early-stage proposal, not a scheduled upgrade. It’s slotted for consideration after Ethereum’s Hegota fork, under a placeholder name, I-Star, that signals intent more than commitment. Proposals like this typically go through months of community review, implementation testing, and client coordination on the Ethereum Improvement Proposals repository before they’re anywhere close to mainnet. What it does signal now is where Ethereum’s core research is pointed: toward quantum resistance and privacy being solved at the protocol’s plumbing level, not bolted on as a separate layer.
