Bitcoin ETFs Snap a Two-Day Losing Streak

  • U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs took in $159.5 million in net inflows
  • BlackRock’s IBIT led with $184 million
  • Ether ETFs saw a net outflow of $39.3 million the same day

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs pulled in $159.5 million in net inflows, ending two consecutive days of outflows that had totaled more than $746 million. BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for the bulk of the move, taking in $184 million on its own, which means other funds in the category actually saw net redemptions even as the category’s overall total turned positive.

That detail matters because it shows the inflow was concentrated rather than broad-based. When a single fund like IBIT accounts for more than the entire category’s net gain, it typically signals one or two large institutional allocations rather than a wide shift in retail or advisor sentiment.

Ether ETFs moved the opposite direction, losing $39.3 million in net outflows on the same day, with BlackRock’s ETHA fund leading the redemptions. The split shows institutional money currently favoring bitcoin exposure over ether, even though both assets are trading in the same macro environment and facing the same interest rate backdrop this week.

The divergence extends a pattern that has held for most of September, in which bitcoin ETFs have alternated between modest inflows and outflows while ether ETFs have skewed more consistently negative. Analysts tracking the flows have not pointed to a single catalyst behind ether’s relative underperformance, though the absence of an ether-specific news event this week, compared with the regulatory and rate-hike headlines driving bitcoin’s narrative, may be part of why allocators are rotating toward the asset with a clearer story attached to it.

Spot bitcoin ETFs as a category have taken in tens of billions of dollars cumulatively since their January 2024 launch, though daily flows have grown choppier over the past two quarters compared with the steadier inflows seen in the products’ first year. That shift toward single-day swings rather than sustained multi-week trends in either direction has made it harder for analysts to read short-term sentiment from any individual day’s numbers, including this week’s rebound, without waiting for a longer run of data pointing in the same direction.

The concentration of this week’s inflow in a single fund also says something about how the ETF category has matured. In the products’ first year, a broader spread of issuers, including Fidelity and Grayscale alongside BlackRock, regularly split large inflow days more evenly, whereas single-issuer dominance on a given day has become more common as BlackRock’s IBIT has grown into the largest fund in the category by assets under management. That scale gives IBIT an outsized ability to move the category’s daily headline number on its own, which is part of why analysts increasingly look at issuer-level detail rather than the category total alone when judging whether a given day’s flows reflect genuine broad-based demand.
