  • dtcpay raised $25 million in a Series A round led by Japan’s SBI Group
  • The round extends an earlier funding raise, bringing dtcpay’s total Series A to $25 million
  • Funds are earmarked for expanding institutional stablecoin payment infrastructure

dtcpay, a stablecoin-focused payments firm, closed a $25 million Series A round led by Japan’s SBI Group. The round funds dtcpay’s push into institutional stablecoin settlement infrastructure, a segment of the market that has grown rapidly as banks and payment companies look for ways to move dollar-denominated value across borders faster and more cheaply than traditional correspondent banking allows.

SBI Group has been one of the more active traditional financial institutions in crypto infrastructure over the past several years, with existing investments spanning digital asset exchanges, custody providers, and blockchain infrastructure firms across Asia. Its participation in dtcpay’s round fits a pattern of Japanese financial institutions moving earlier and more aggressively into regulated crypto infrastructure than many of their counterparts in other major markets, partly a reflection of Japan’s comparatively clear regulatory framework for digital assets.

Stablecoins have moved from a primarily crypto-trading tool into a broader payments use case over the past two years, with companies increasingly using dollar-pegged tokens to settle cross-border invoices, payroll, and vendor payments outside the traditional banking system. That shift has created demand for payment infrastructure firms like dtcpay that sit between stablecoin issuers and the businesses actually using stablecoins for real-world payments, handling compliance, conversion, and settlement in a way that lets a business accept or send stablecoins without directly managing the underlying blockchain infrastructure.

The funding comes as competition in stablecoin payment infrastructure intensifies, with several larger fintech and crypto exchange players building comparable settlement products in parallel. dtcpay’s ability to differentiate will likely depend on how quickly it can secure banking partnerships and regulatory licenses across the specific markets it targets, since access to local banking rails, rather than the stablecoin technology itself, tends to be the harder problem for firms operating in this space.

Cross-border settlement has historically relied on a chain of correspondent banks, each taking a cut and adding processing time, a system that can leave payments taking several business days to clear and reconcile. Stablecoin-based settlement can compress that timeline to minutes in principle, but only if the receiving business has a reliable way to convert stablecoins back into local currency without taking on unwanted price or counterparty risk, which is the specific gap firms like dtcpay are built to fill. SBI Group’s backing gives dtcpay a stronger foothold in Japan’s banking system to solve that conversion problem for corporate clients operating in the region.
