ZetaChain Votes to Shut Down Its Own Blockchain and Move to Solana

  • ZetaChain token holders voted to shut down the project’s own Layer 1 blockchain
  • The vote passed by a wide margin, reported near 99%
  • ZETA, the network’s token, will migrate to Solana

ZetaChain‘s token holders voted to shut down the project’s own Layer 1 blockchain and migrate its ZETA token to Solana, a governance decision that ends the network’s run as an independent chain rather than the more common path of a struggling project simply losing activity over time. The vote passed by a wide margin, reported near 99% in favor, which suggests the decision reflected a broad consensus among token holders rather than a narrow or contested outcome.

ZetaChain had positioned itself around omnichain functionality, aiming to let smart contracts on its network interact directly with assets and applications across multiple other blockchains without users needing to manually bridge funds between them. That kind of cross-chain infrastructure has become a more crowded category over the past two years, with several competing approaches attempting to solve the same interoperability problem, which has made it harder for any single one to stand out enough to sustain independent network activity.

Choosing to formally wind down a Layer 1 blockchain, rather than simply letting it continue operating with declining usage, is a comparatively rare move in crypto. Most projects that lose relevance tend to keep their chains technically running even after activity and developer attention have moved elsewhere, since shutting down requires an active governance decision rather than passive neglect. A vote to migrate the token to a larger, more active network like Solana instead gives existing holders continued exposure to the ZETA token without the project needing to keep maintaining its own separate blockchain infrastructure.

The specific mechanics of the migration, including the exact timeline for when ZETA moves to Solana and what happens to existing ZetaChain infrastructure in the interim, are being worked out following the vote rather than finalized within it. Token holders who supported the move are effectively betting that ZETA retains more value as an application-layer token on a larger, more active chain than it would trying to sustain its own independent network against larger, better-funded interoperability competitors.

The decision adds ZetaChain to a small but growing list of projects that have chosen to formally end their own Layer 1 ambitions rather than continue competing for a share of blockchain activity that has increasingly consolidated around a smaller number of dominant networks.
