Solana ships its biggest transaction upgrade in years, and token launches hit a new daily record

  • Solana activated Transaction V1 on mainnet on September 9, roughly quadrupling the maximum transaction size the network supports.
  • A companion change began cutting rent fees for token accounts under a five-phase reduction plan.
  • Daily new token launches on Solana passed 263,000 in a single day this week, a new record for the network.

Solana pushed through its most significant transaction-format change in years this week, activating what developers call Transaction V1 on mainnet on September 9. The upgrade raises the network’s maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, more than three times the previous ceiling, under a proposal formally specified as SIMD-0296 in Solana’s public improvement-document repository. In practical terms, a larger transaction envelope lets a single transaction carry more instructions, more account references, and more signature data at once, which matters most for applications that currently have to split complex operations across multiple transactions to stay under the old limit.

The change is a breaking one at the wire-format level, meaning wallets, indexers, and other software that parses raw Solana transactions needed updates to handle the new format correctly rather than simply benefiting from more space automatically. That is part of why the rollout was scheduled and announced well ahead of activation, giving infrastructure providers time to update their parsing logic rather than discovering compatibility problems after the fact.

Running alongside Transaction V1 is a separate change to how the network charges rent on token accounts, specified under SIMD-0437 in the same improvement-document repository, which began a five-phase reduction targeting a 90 percent cut in rent costs by the time all phases complete. Rent on Solana is the small balance an account must hold to stay active on-chain, and token accounts, the accounts that hold a user’s balance of a specific token, are among the most numerous account types on the network. A large cut to what each one costs to maintain lowers the baseline cost of holding many different tokens across many wallets, a cost that compounds quickly on a network where a single active user or protocol can generate thousands of token accounts.

The timing lines up with a separate record set this week: new token launches on Solana crossed 263,000 in a single day, the highest daily figure the network has recorded. That volume reflects how much of Solana’s current activity runs through permissionless token-creation tools that let anyone deploy a new token with minimal friction, a category of activity that has become one of the largest single sources of on-chain transactions on the network over the past year, separate from trading volume or DeFi activity in the more traditional sense.

Both threads point to the same underlying story about where Solana’s engineering priorities sit right now: making the base layer cheaper and more spacious for high-frequency, high-account-count activity, at the same time as that exact kind of activity, mass token creation, is setting new volume records on the network. Solana’s next major scheduled change, a consensus upgrade called Alpenglow, is targeted for October and is expected to alter how the network finalizes blocks, a more fundamental change than either of this week’s updates. For now, Transaction V1 and the rent reduction are the more immediate, already-live changes shaping what developers can build without hitting the network’s previous structural limits.
