UK's FCA Opens Cryptoasset Firm Authorization Window

  • The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority opened its application window for cryptoasset firm authorization at 7 a.m. on September 30, 2026
  • Firms can now apply for authorization, or to vary existing permissions, ahead of an application deadline of February 28, 2027
  • The new mandatory cryptoasset regime itself takes effect on October 25, 2027, covering trading platforms, intermediaries, custodians, stablecoin issuers, and staking service providers

The Financial Conduct Authority confirmed on its official website that cryptoasset firms are now able to apply for authorisation, or to vary their existing permissions, “from 7am on 30 September 2026,” opening the gateway into the UK’s new cryptoasset regulatory regime.

The application window follows the FCA’s publication of final rules and guidance for the sector on June 30, 2026, which set out financial resilience standards including capital requirements and stress testing, market integrity rules addressing insider trading and manipulation, dedicated requirements for stablecoin issuers, and the extension of Consumer Duty protections to cryptoasset customers. Firms now have until February 28, 2027 to submit applications, with the new regime itself becoming mandatory on October 25, 2027.

The framework applies broadly across the industry, covering trading platforms, intermediaries, custodians, stablecoin issuers, and staking service providers operating in or serving the UK market. FCA Executive Director David Geale said when the final rules were published that the regime gives firms “a stable, competitive home to build and grow,” while industry groups including CryptoUK and the Global Blockchain Business Council welcomed the final guidance as giving the sector long-sought regulatory certainty after years of piecemeal rules.

The FCA has said it is hosting webinars covering the prudential regime, authorization procedures, and how the FCA Handbook applies to cryptoasset firms, and has been running pre-application support meetings with firms since July 2026 to help them prepare before the window opened. Firms that do not secure authorization or a variation of permission by the deadline risk losing their ability to lawfully serve UK customers once the regime takes full effect in October 2027.

The opening of the gateway marks the UK’s formal transition from a narrower anti-money-laundering registration regime toward a comprehensive, FSMA-based framework for crypto firms, aligning the UK more closely with the EU’s MiCA regulation and other major jurisdictions that have already stood up dedicated crypto licensing regimes. With the application window now live and a firm deadline set for early 2027, exchanges, custodians, and stablecoin issuers operating in the UK face a concrete timeline to formalize their regulatory status or wind down UK operations.

The FCA’s phased approach, publishing final rules months ahead of the application window and then giving firms a further five-month runway to apply before the regime becomes mandatory, is designed to avoid the kind of compliance scramble that has accompanied other major regulatory transitions elsewhere in the world. Firms that engaged with the FCA’s pre-application support meetings over the summer are expected to move through the gateway fastest, while newer entrants and firms weighing whether to seek UK authorization at all now have a firm five-month window in which to decide.
