  • KuCoin’s MSTUUSDT perpetual contract tracks an ETF that already applies two times daily leverage to MicroStrategy’s stock price
  • A trader using the contract’s own maximum leverage, up to 20 times on some listings, compounds that leverage on top of the underlying fund’s existing 2x exposure
  • Exchanges disclose this structure in listing details, but the compounding effect is easy for traders to overlook if they do not check what the underlying asset actually is

Crypto exchanges have built an increasingly varied lineup of synthetic perpetual contracts tracking traditional stocks and funds, and one listing from KuCoin illustrates a risk that is easy to overlook amid the broader trend: some of these contracts track underlying assets that are already leveraged products in their own right, meaning a trader’s own contract leverage effectively stacks on top of leverage embedded in the underlying asset itself.

KuCoin’s MSTUUSDT contract is a clear example. The underlying asset it tracks is the T-Rex 2X Long MSTR Daily Target ETF, listed on Cboe BZX under the ticker MSTU, a fund that itself applies two times daily leverage to MicroStrategy’s stock price. A trader opening a position in KuCoin’s MSTUUSDT perpetual at the contract’s own maximum leverage, which KuCoin has offered up to 20 times on comparable listings, would be compounding that contract-level leverage directly on top of the underlying fund’s existing 2x exposure, rather than applying 20x leverage to MicroStrategy’s raw stock price movement.

The practical effect of this compounding is that price moves in the underlying stock get amplified twice over: once by the leveraged ETF’s own 2x daily reset mechanism, and again by whatever additional leverage a trader applies through the perpetual contract itself. Leveraged ETFs that reset daily can also behave in counterintuitive ways over periods longer than a single day, since their returns compound daily rather than tracking a simple multiple of the underlying asset’s return over an extended holding period, adding a further layer of complexity that a trader stacking contract leverage on top needs to understand.

Exchanges generally disclose which underlying asset a given synthetic perpetual contract tracks as part of their listing announcements, including naming the specific ETF or stock involved, but the compounding risk is not always obvious unless a trader actually checks what that underlying asset is and whether it already carries embedded leverage of its own, rather than assuming a stock-tracking contract always moves one-to-one with the plain underlying company’s share price.

This kind of layered leverage exposure represents a meaningfully higher risk profile than trading a perpetual contract tracking an unleveraged stock at the same nominal contract leverage, since the combined effective leverage, and the corresponding potential for rapid, amplified losses, can be considerably higher than the headline leverage figure on the contract itself might suggest at a glance. The listing announcement, published on KuCoin’s official notice board, names the T-Rex 2X Long MSTR Daily Target ETF as the contract’s specific underlying asset.
