Why Payment Giants and Banks Keep Lining Up as Stablecoin Partners

  • Mastercard’s Global Money Platform, built with BVNK, combines fiat and stablecoin accounts under a single integration that partners can offer under their own brand
  • Circle shares roughly 59 cents of every dollar of USDC-related revenue with its distribution partners, according to the company’s own figures
  • Both structures reflect a broader pattern of traditional payment and banking players choosing to partner with stablecoin infrastructure rather than compete against it directly

Traditional payment companies and banks have increasingly chosen to partner directly with stablecoin infrastructure providers rather than treat stablecoins purely as a competitive threat to their existing payment rails, and two recent examples help explain why that partnership model has become so common across the industry.

Mastercard’s Global Money Platform, built jointly with stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK following Mastercard’s acquisition of BVNK, combines Mastercard’s existing payment rails with BVNK’s stablecoin technology into a single modular platform. The product lets partners offer multi-currency accounts holding both fiat currency and stablecoins side by side, with real-time conversion between the two and stablecoin-linked cards, all accessible under the partner’s own brand rather than Mastercard’s or BVNK’s. That structure lets banks and fintechs tap into stablecoin functionality without having to build the underlying infrastructure themselves, while Mastercard captures a role in a growing category of payment activity it might otherwise have had little direct involvement in.

Circle’s relationship with its own distribution partners works through a different but related logic: direct revenue sharing. According to Circle’s own published figures, the company paid out roughly 59 cents of every dollar of USDC-related revenue to distribution partners and transaction costs in the first half of 2026, reinvesting about 34 cents and keeping only around 7 cents as net profit. Major partners benefiting from this structure include Coinbase, which reported average USDC holdings across its products reaching an all-time high of $20 billion, and Binance, which signed a five-year commercial agreement with Circle in September 2026 and separately invested $100 million directly into the company.

Both examples point to the same underlying incentive: giving an existing payments or exchange platform a direct financial stake in a stablecoin’s growth tends to align that partner’s interests with actively promoting and distributing the stablecoin, rather than leaving them indifferent or, worse, incentivized to push customers toward a competing option instead. For a stablecoin issuer or infrastructure provider, sharing meaningful revenue with the platforms that actually reach end users is often a more effective growth strategy than trying to build that distribution reach independently from scratch.

This pattern helps explain why banks like HSBC, which launched its own stablecoin called RedCoin in Hong Kong, are entering the space alongside, rather than purely in competition with, established stablecoin infrastructure players, since the economics increasingly favor partnership and shared revenue models over any single company trying to control an entire stablecoin’s distribution chain alone. The announcement, published on BVNK’s own press page, describes the Global Money Platform’s partner-branded structure in detail.
