How Uniswap Quietly Turned Itself Into a Decentralized Exchange Aggregator

  • Uniswap’s Aggregator Hooks feature wraps external liquidity sources, including Curve, Fluid and PancakeSwap, so its own routing system treats them as native pools
  • Trades routed through those external sources still settle in a single transaction and still pay Uniswap’s own protocol fees
  • The feature builds on a governance proposal called UNIfication that the Uniswap community took up back in November 2025

Uniswap has traditionally competed with other decentralized exchanges by trying to attract liquidity directly into its own pools. Its new Aggregator Hooks feature takes a different approach entirely: rather than competing solely for liquidity, Uniswap’s own routing system now pulls in liquidity from several competing platforms directly, turning the protocol itself into something closer to a liquidity aggregator that happens to also run its own pools.

The mechanism relies on Uniswap v4’s hooks architecture, a system that lets custom logic attach to a given liquidity pool. Aggregator Hooks uses that same architecture to wrap each external liquidity source, Uniswap named Curve, Fluid and PancakeSwap specifically among seven sources supported at launch, so that Uniswap’s own routing treats that external liquidity as if it were simply another native v4 pool, rather than requiring a separate, bolted-on aggregation layer sitting outside the core protocol.

Despite pulling liquidity from what are effectively competing platforms, Uniswap structured the feature so trades still settle in a single transaction, with the company’s own announcement emphasizing that users have nothing additional to approve beyond what a standard Uniswap swap already requires. Achieving that single-transaction settlement while routing through genuinely separate, independently operated liquidity sources represents a meaningful technical achievement, since aggregating across multiple distinct protocols typically risks adding complexity that could otherwise degrade the user experience.

The economic logic behind the move is just as notable as the technical architecture. Swaps routed through these external liquidity sources still pay Uniswap’s own protocol fees, meaning Uniswap can now potentially earn fee revenue on trading volume it does not directly host in its own pools at all. Those fees feed into UNI token burns, a mechanism that reduces the token’s circulating supply over time, so expanding the pool of transactions generating protocol fees could meaningfully affect the pace of those burns if the feature sees meaningful adoption from traders and integrators.

Uniswap tied the launch explicitly back to a governance proposal called UNIfication, which the Uniswap community had taken up in November 2025, framing Aggregator Hooks as the practical product realization of a direction the protocol’s governance process had already signaled months earlier. The announcement, published on Uniswap’s own blog, said the platform has processed more than $4.5 trillion in lifetime trading volume, a scale that makes even a modest uptake of the new aggregation feature potentially significant for the protocol’s overall fee revenue.
