British sprint star CJ Ujah, a former World Champion and Olympic relay medallist, has been arrested and charged as part of a major police investigation into an alleged cryptocurrency fraud ring. The case has surprised many in the athletics community, especially since another young British sprinter is also among those charged.
The 32-year-old from Enfield, North London, is one of ten people facing charges of conspiracy to defraud after coordinated police raids took place on April 29 across Kent, Essex, and London.
ROCU-Led Major Police Operation
The operation was led by the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) with support from Kent Police, City of London Police, and the Metropolitan Police.
According to the ROCU, the group allegedly impersonated police officers and cryptocurrency exchange staff during phone calls to victims. They tricked people into revealing their wallet seed phrases under the pretext of helping with an investigation or preventing fraud. Once the seed phrases were obtained, the suspects allegedly drained the victims’ cryptocurrency wallets. One victim reportedly lost over £300,000.
All ten suspects were arrested and charged. They appeared at Margate Magistrates’ Court on April 30. Seven of them, including Ujah, were granted bail, while three – including fellow sprinter Brandon Mingeli – were remanded in custody. The group is next due to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on May 28.
Ujah’s Career: From Track Glory to Legal Trouble
CJ Ujah was once one of Britain’s brightest sprint talents. In 2017, he anchored the British 4x100m relay team to a memorable gold medal at the World Championships in London. He has also won multiple British national titles.
However, his career has been marked by setbacks. In 2021, he tested positive for prohibited substances at the Tokyo Olympics, resulting in the British relay team being stripped of their silver medal. Ujah served a 22-month ban but maintained he did not intentionally dope. He returned to competition in 2023 but has not raced competitively since May 2025. His arrest has now thrown his athletic future into serious doubt. British Athletics is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
Another Young Sprinter Also Charged
The case also involves 25-year-old British sprinter Brandon Mingeli, who represented Great Britain at the 2021 European U23 Championships. Mingeli, from Chelmsford, was one of the three suspects remanded in custody. His involvement has added to the dismay within UK track and field circles.
