  • Atum raised a $13.5 million seed round led by Variant, with participation from PayPal Ventures, Abstract Ventures, Road Capital, Mirana Ventures, First Commit, and Credibly Neutral
  • The company has built a coordination layer connecting payment companies, developers, and enterprises for money movement across multiple blockchains and stablecoins, without issuing currency or taking custody of funds itself
  • Atum’s platform is now available to developers at atum.xyz, led by chief executive Pete Cooling, formerly of Visa’s crypto product strategy team

Atum announced in a release distributed on PR Newswire at 8:38 a.m. ET on September 22, 2026 that it has emerged from stealth with $13.5 million in seed funding, led by Variant, with participation from PayPal Ventures, Abstract Ventures, Road Capital, Mirana Ventures, First Commit, and Credibly Neutral, under the headline “Atum Emerges from Stealth with the Open Payments Network for Global Money Movement.”

The company describes itself as building a coordination layer that connects payment companies, developers, and enterprises for global money movement across multiple blockchains and stablecoins. According to the release, Atum’s platform handles authorization, routing, and confirmation of payments, without itself issuing a currency, operating blockchain infrastructure, or taking custody of user funds, positioning it as connective middleware rather than a payments company in its own right.

“In 2014 I saw that blockchains were payments networks, and everything since has pointed to the same conclusion. Onchain accounts are the future bank accounts,” said Atum chief executive Pete Cooling in the release. Cooling previously led crypto product strategy at Visa and served as the company’s representative on the OpenWallet Foundation standards body, giving him direct experience with how large, established payment networks approach interoperability standards before founding Atum.

The platform is now available to developers at atum.xyz, and the seed round’s investor list mixes crypto-native venture firms, Variant, Mirana Ventures, with PayPal Ventures, the corporate venture arm of one of the largest established payment companies, suggesting interest in Atum’s coordination-layer approach from both crypto infrastructure investors and incumbents in traditional payments looking for exposure to stablecoin-based settlement rails.

Atum’s positioning, as neutral routing and coordination infrastructure rather than a stablecoin issuer or custodian, reflects a broader trend among newer payments infrastructure startups: rather than competing directly with Circle, Tether, or the banks now entering stablecoins, they aim to sit above the fragmented landscape of issuers and chains, letting payment companies route transactions across whichever stablecoin and blockchain combination makes sense for a given corridor without integrating each one separately. Whether that neutral, non-custodial model can scale to handle meaningful transaction volume, without ever touching funds directly, will be the central test of Atum’s approach as it moves from stealth into broader developer adoption.
