Ethereum's Glamsterdam Upgrade Remains in Limbo After Its Hoodi Delay

  • No new activation date has been set for Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet since its October 22, 2026 postponement
  • The delay stemmed from developers wanting more time to study how a gas-repricing change, EIP-8037, could affect existing mainnet smart contracts
  • Ethereum developers had warned about this specific risk as early as August 24, 2026, months before the actual delay was announced

Ethereum’s Glamsterdam network upgrade remains without a confirmed activation date on the Hoodi testnet, following the Ethereum Foundation’s decision on October 22, 2026 to postpone a step that had originally been scheduled for October 26. The Foundation’s own blog, the closest thing to an official public record of Ethereum’s development process, has posted no newer update superseding that delay as of this writing.

The postponement traces back to concerns about EIP-8037, a proposal that changes how much computational gas certain operations cost on the network. Ethereum’s core developers wanted additional time to study how that repricing could interact with smart contracts already deployed on the live Ethereum mainnet, particularly ones written with specific assumptions baked in, such as a fixed 2,300-gas stipend for certain operations, hardcoded limits on how much gas a contract call can consume, or logic that checks the gasleft() function, which reports how much gas remains available during a transaction’s execution.

This was not a sudden discovery. The Ethereum Foundation had flagged the same underlying risk in a blog post as far back as August 24, 2026, warning developers and contract authors that EIP-8037 and a related proposal, EIP-8038, could potentially break layer-one contracts relying on those kinds of fixed-gas assumptions. The eventual October 22 delay represents that long-standing concern finally translating into an actual schedule change, rather than remaining a theoretical warning developers had simply chosen to proceed past.

Alongside the Glamsterdam delay, a separate change to Hoodi’s gas limit, which would have raised it to 200 million at the same originally scheduled epoch, was also pulled from the calendar. The Foundation’s announcement was explicit that mainnet users and everyday holders of ETH need not take any action as a result, since Hoodi is a public testnet used specifically for catching compatibility problems like this one before any change reaches the live network where real value is at stake.

For anyone following Ethereum’s development closely, the practical guidance from the Foundation has been to disregard any client release schedules still referencing the original October 26 date and instead watch for fresh guidance directly from individual client development teams as a new timeline takes shape. The announcement, published on the Ethereum Foundation’s own blog, gave no estimate for how long the additional compatibility study might take before a new date is set.
