  • The XRP Ledger Foundation published a formal Vulnerability Disclosure Report on October 9, 2026 covering two bugs fixed in the xrpld 3.4.1 emergency release
  • The two issues were a validation flaw in how Batch inner transaction wrappers were checked, and an overflow error in the payment engine’s handling of XRP amounts
  • The report formalizes disclosure for a fix that had already shipped roughly two weeks earlier, following the Foundation’s practice of publishing detailed writeups after critical patches are safely deployed

The XRP Ledger Foundation published a Vulnerability Disclosure Report on October 9, 2026, formally documenting two bugs that had been fixed in the xrpld 3.4.1 release, an emergency patch the Foundation had already pushed out to validators weeks earlier. The report follows the Foundation’s established pattern of first shipping a fix quickly once a serious issue is confirmed, then publishing a fuller technical writeup afterward once the patch has had time to propagate safely across the network’s validator set.

The first bug described in the report involved a validation error in how the ledger’s software checked the wrapper surrounding inner transactions inside a Batch, a feature that allows multiple transactions to be submitted and processed together as a single atomic unit. A flaw in that wrapper validation logic could have let malformed or improperly structured inner transactions slip through checks that were supposed to catch them, undermining the integrity guarantees the Batch feature is meant to provide.

The second bug sat in the payment engine itself, specifically in how the software handled arithmetic overflow conditions when processing XRP payment amounts. Overflow bugs of this kind occur when a calculation produces a result too large for the data type meant to store it, causing the value to wrap around to an unexpected, often much smaller or differently structured number, a class of bug that has historically been responsible for some of the most severe vulnerabilities across blockchain software when it touches logic governing token balances or supply.

Both issues were addressed in the same emergency release, rippled version 3.4.1, which the XRP Ledger Foundation shipped without going through its typical multi-week amendment voting process, opting instead for an expedited rollout given the severity of what the underlying bugs could have enabled if combined and exploited by an attacker. More than 80% of XRPL validators had reportedly upgraded to the patched version within days of the release going out, a rapid adoption rate that reflects how seriously the validator community treated the underlying issue once alerted to it.

The October 9 report itself serves primarily as the Foundation’s formal, after-the-fact documentation of exactly what the two bugs were and how the fix addressed them, a step that gives the broader XRPL developer and security community a detailed technical record to study even though the actual patch had already been live and adopted across the network for roughly two weeks by the time this report was published. The report, published on the XRP Ledger Foundation’s official blog, is categorized under the Foundation’s Advisories section, the standard location where the organization posts formal writeups of resolved security issues affecting the ledger’s core software.
