Monad Proposes Wallet Upgrade for Key Recovery and Quantum Security

Monad has proposed native wallet key rotation that could let accounts upgrade to post-quantum cryptography without changing their addresses, putting its draft alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum’s quantum-resistance efforts.

Monad Proposes Wallet Upgrade for Key Recovery and Quantum Security

Monad has published a draft proposal that would let accounts change their authentication keys, including upgrading to post-quantum cryptography, without changing the account’s wallet address.

Post-quantum schemes are designed to resist attacks from a future quantum computer powerful enough to break the math that current wallet signatures rely on.

A new MIP has been published: Flexible and Upgradeable Account Authentication

That specific trick, swapping a wallet’s keys while keeping its address. Smart-contract wallets have allowed it for years, since a contract’s owners can be updated without moving the contract itself.

What Monad is proposing is different in scope: building that flexibility into every account natively, the same frontier Ethereum has sketched but not yet shipped through its own EIP-8141 proposal, rather than requiring a separate smart-contract wallet to get it.

How Monad’s Wallet Key Rotation Would Work

The mechanism, as authors Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch describe it, works by fixing an account’s address at creation, derived from a hash of its starting configuration, while keeping a separate “authentication configuration” mutable for the account’s lifetime.

Rotating a key runs through a proposed AuthConfigManager precompile: the holder submits a new key that satisfies the account’s reconfiguration policy, and the change takes effect after Monad’s three-block execution delay.

That policy also governs changes to itself, so a reconfiguration that could lock an account out can never be installed in the first place. Babel and Camenisch are researchers at Category Labs, the Monad core engineering team renamed from Monad Labs in 2024.

Set against the two other chains rethinking wallet security for the same reason, Monad’s plan lands in the middle in ambition and last in progress:

How Monad Compares With Bitcoin and Ethereum

What that would mean in practice differs sharply by chain:

  • If Bitcoin’s BIP-361 advances, holders would eventually need to actively move funds to a new address type before a cutoff, rather than upgrading in place.
  • If Ethereum’s plan ships on schedule, individual accounts could opt into a post-quantum signature scheme without moving funds, sometime after its 2026 hard fork.
  • If Monad’s draft becomes a numbered proposal and ships, that same opt-in upgrade would be available at the account level from the start, without needing a separate smart-contract wallet.

For now, that last scenario is the least certain of the three. The post is marked “Draft v1,” covering architecture only, with implementation deferred. It has not yet been assigned a number on Monad’s own proposal registry, which currently tracks twelve numbered MIPs on other parts of the protocol.

One forum reply, from a user identified as Anzus_GemWallet, already raised the practical concern that matters most for adoption: whether non-technical holders will get “a straightforward default path, with clear warnings before anything important changes.” As of this writing, that question has not been answered on the thread.

The proposal will be worth revisiting once it clears Monad’s own review process. A numbered MIP with an implementation spec would mark a real step toward shipping.

Monad offered early investors a discounted exit from locked MON through a $60 million liquidity program, but nearly all holders declined as major token unlocks approach. The decision adds context to Monad’s broader efforts to manage its token supply and investor liquidity ahead of the next phase of the protocol.
