  • Two Binance employees were detained by UAE authorities in recent weeks and have since been cleared and released, the New York Times reported Aug. 20.
  • Binance said the employees gave statements as part of what it called routine inquiries into fund flows through a Binance client money account.
  • No UAE authority has issued a public statement on the inquiry, and secondary detail on how the detentions unfolded has not been independently confirmed.

Two Binance employees were detained by authorities in the United Arab Emirates in recent weeks and have since been cleared and released, the New York Times reported Aug. 20, citing four people familiar with the matter, two of whom had direct knowledge of the situation.

What Binance says happened

A Binance spokesperson said a small number of employees were asked to provide statements to UAE authorities as part of what the company called routine inquiries into fund flows through a Binance client money account.

“The employees were not targets of the probe and were cleared and released,” the spokesperson said, according to the Times’s reporting.

“Cryptocurrency and the mechanics of institutional client money accounts remain emerging concepts in many jurisdictions; we are working constructively with Dubai Police,” the spokesperson added.

What remains unclear

No UAE government body or police authority has issued a public statement describing the investigation, and the specific nature of the under review has not been disclosed.

Secondary accounts of the Times’s reporting also differ on how the detentions occurred, one version places an employee’s stop at an airport in the Emirates, another places the questioning at a police station. Binance holds a license to operate in Dubai, secured in 2022.

A public statement from UAE authorities, or further reporting on what the fund-flow inquiry specifically examined, would resolve what is currently a story told largely through Binance’s own account of events. A Binance email channel reportedly shared extensive user data with Russian authorities, raising privacy and EU data protection concerns.
