BitMEX, a pioneering cryptocurrency derivatives platform, will cease operations on September 23, 2026. The exchange’s parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited, made the decision following a strategic review of its business and the competitive crypto industry landscape.

The announcement, issued on July 23, 2026, halts new account registrations immediately. Trading will continue with restrictions until the closure date, after which users can still access accounts solely for withdrawals. The move marks the end of an exchange that introduced high-leverage perpetual swaps to the broader market in 2014.

Dear BitMEX Users,

Today, we share with a very heavy heart that BitMEX exchange will shut down its operations, effective 23 September 2026 at 04:00:00 UTC.

  • BitMEX will fully sunset operations at 04:00 UTC on September 23, 2026.
  • New registrations stopped immediately; risk limits begin August 26 to facilitate orderly wind-down.
  • Users urged to close positions and withdraw funds; remaining balances after closure subject to monthly fees.
  • The platform maintained a clean security record with no customer funds lost to hacks over its history.
  • Current derivatives 24h volume stands around $185-188 million with open interest near $575 million.

Official Announcement and Timeline

BitMEX detailed a phased shutdown. From the announcement date, the exchange operates normally until August 26, when it imposes risk limits preventing new positions. Users will only be able to reduce existing ones. Force closures will follow for any remaining open positions by the final closure time to ensure an orderly market wind-down.

The company emphasized its commitment to user fund safety, noting that assets exceed liabilities per its Proof of Reserves and Liabilities. Post-closure, logged-in users will retain access to view balances and transaction history for withdrawals, though processing may face delays due to security reviews and blockchain confirmation times. All staked BMEX tokens have been unstaked and made available.

KYC-verified users failing to withdraw by closure will incur an account maintenance fee of USD 50 equivalent or 1% per annum (whichever greater), charged monthly. BitMEX warned users against phishing attempts exploiting the news and advised vigilance.

Current Market Position and Data

BitMEX Open Interest Decline
BitMEX Open Interest Decline

BitMEX currently supports 13 spot trading pairs and 37 derivatives contracts. As of the announcement, the exchange recorded approximately 185 to 188 million USD in 24-hour derivatives volume. According to CoinGlass, Open Interest stands between 174 to 260 million USD, with activity heavily concentrated in Bitcoin perpetuals (over 200 million USD) and Ethereum perpetuals. Spot volume is negligible, meaning derivatives trading accounts for over 99% of total activity on the platform. These figures remain modest compared to leaders like Binance, which exceeds 45 billion USD daily.

Additional Context

In late June 2026, BitMEX implemented a significant leadership overhaul. CEO Stephan Lutz, CFO Ina Steiner, and Chief Growth Officer Raphael Polansky exited their roles, with Peter Wilkinson, previously serving as Global General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, appointed as the new CEO.

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes remains active in the market. On July 15, 2026, on-chain records showed Hayes accumulating 1,293 ETH through two separate transfers valued at approximately $2.48 million. This move followed an earlier reduction in his Ethereum position earlier in the summer.

The closure announcement arrives amid a highly competitive crypto derivatives environment. While BitMEX pioneered many of today’s standard trading mechanisms, trading volume has increasingly shifted toward larger, more diversified platforms. Its exit represents the end of an era for one of the sector’s longest-standing derivatives venues.
