Major financial institutions and Bitcoin-focused companies have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium (BSC) to help strengthen the network’s long-term security through research funding, developer support, and public education. The initiative was announced by Michael Saylor on July 23, 2026, highlighting a collaborative effort to support Bitcoin’s open-source ecosystem without changing its decentralized governance.

Bitcoin’s security is a shared responsibility.

— Michael Saylor (@saylor) July 23, 2026

The consortium includes Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy. Members have collectively committed $15 million over three years, with each organization independently deciding how to fund Bitcoin developers, researchers, and security-focused initiatives.

Strategy remains one of the largest institutional supporters of Bitcoin. Earlier this month, the company increased its USD reserve by $225 million, while MSTR shares reclaimed the $100 level. It currently holds 843,775 BTC, the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury globally.

  • Funding: $15 million pledged over the next three years for Bitcoin security research.
  • Members: Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy.
  • Development model: Members will fund projects independently instead of creating a centralized grant pool.
  • Mission: Support open-source developers, security researchers, and educational initiatives while avoiding protocol governance.
  • Coordinator: Mike Schmidt of Brink will oversee the consortium’s activities in a volunteer capacity.
  • Research priority: Advance post-quantum cryptography and long-term Bitcoin security.
  • Governance: The consortium does not develop Bitcoin, propose protocol changes, or represent Bitcoin developers, preserving Bitcoin’s decentralized governance.

Saylor backs Bitcoin’s stable base layer

Michael Saylor said Bitcoin’s core protocol should remain stable, warning that unnecessary modifications could reduce the network’s security, reliability, and predictability. He argued that future innovation should primarily happen through Layer-2 technologies, applications, and open-source development rather than changes to Bitcoin’s base consensus.

The consortium’s approach reflects that philosophy by funding security research and developer initiatives without influencing Bitcoin’s protocol. Its long-term objective is to strengthen the network while preserving the decentralized principles that underpin Bitcoin.

Saylor said Bitcoin’s greatest strengths are its security, decentralization, and predictability. He believes preserving those qualities is essential while allowing innovation to continue through Layer-2 networks and open-source applications instead of altering Bitcoin’s core rules.
