- Metaplanet’s wallets sent 1,000 BTC, worth about $79.8 million, to Coinbase Prime in three transactions on August 25, 2026.
- Metaplanet has not commented on the transfer. Its most recent disclosure, from August 18, put consolidated group holdings at 43,000 BTC.
- A similar Coinbase Prime deposit from Metaplanet in August, and several from Strategy earlier this year.

Metaplanet moved 1,000 bitcoin from its own wallets to Coinbase Prime on August 25, according to on-chain tracking by Arkham Intelligence. The transfer landed in three separate transactions: 139 BTC worth about $11.1 million, 390 BTC worth $31.1 million, and 471 BTC worth $37.6 million, across addresses the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company and to Coinbase’s institutional arm. One of the transactions is recorded on-chain with its own public transaction hash.
Coinbase Prime is Coinbase’s institutional brokerage, built for hedge funds, asset managers, and corporate treasuries. It combines qualified custody, through the New York-chartered Coinbase Custody Trust Company, with spot and derivatives trading on the same platform.
The same account that holds bitcoin in custody can also be the one that executes a sale, and Arkham’s labels show where coins moved.
Metaplanet’s Own Recent History
On August 12, the company shifted 5,014 BTC, then worth about $322 million, between its own custodial addresses. The move briefly fueled speculation that Metaplanet had sold roughly $320 million in bitcoin. Chief executive Simon Gerovich denied it directly.
“We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours. This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC,” Gerovich said.
Strategy, the largest corporate bitcoin holder, has run into the same suspicion more than once this year. A 441 BTC move to Coinbase Prime coincided with a roughly 3% drop in its stock. A separate 411 BTC deposit pushed prediction market odds on an imminent sale as high as 91%.
In the reporting reviewed for this piece, neither deposit was followed by a confirmed bitcoin sale, and Strategy has kept describing its holding strategy as intact even as individual transfers have repeatedly looked, in the moment, like the start of a liquidation.
What Would Actually Confirm a Sale
Metaplanet confirms that any of the 1,000 BTC has been sold. If the coins move on from Coinbase Prime to an address tied to a market maker or an OTC desk rather than back to Metaplanet.
If Metaplanet’s next disclosure shows total holdings below that 43,000 BTC figure, that would confirm one directly. Until either happens, the deposit sits in the same category as Metaplanet’s own August 12 transfer and Strategy’s past Coinbase Prime moves: a real, on-chain fact that looks alarming in isolation.
