TRM Labs valuation doubles to $2 billion as its biggest government contract sits in court

  • TRM Labs says its valuation has doubled to $2 billion, seven months after its last round, without disclosing any new capital raised.
  • Part of that growth story rests on 600+ government-agency customers, but one of TRM’s largest such deals, a $94.66 million ICE contract, is being challenged in court by rival Chainalysis.
  • A ruling in that case had been requested within days of the funding news; none had been issued as of publication.

TRM Labs, the blockchain intelligence company that law enforcement agencies use to trace crypto tied to crime, said Wednesday its valuation has doubled to $2 billion. The increase came from existing investors adding to their stakes rather than a new funding round, and the company has not disclosed how much money changed hands. CEO Esteban Castaño described the additional investment only as “modest.”

Blockchain Capital, which also led TRM’s previous round, is again the lead backer. “TRM is helping to disrupt almost every facet of digital crime and is now defining AI investigations,” said Spencer Bogart, a general partner at the firm.

“At TRM, we’re building tools investigators need to operate at AI-scale and fight criminal networks,” Castaño said.

TRM says its annual recurring revenue has quadrupled over the past three years and is on pace to cross $100 million within weeks. The company counts more than 600 government agencies across 75 countries as customers, and plans to launch a new AI investigations platform in November aimed at fraud, deepfakes and child sexual abuse material, extending its business beyond crypto-transaction tracing.

A markup, not a new round

The structure of TRM’s increase fits a pattern that has become common among AI-adjacent startups over the past year: a valuation reset from existing backers, announced without a disclosed new capital raise, months rather than years after the prior round. The AI insurance startup Corgi more than doubled its valuation to $2.6 billion in weeks earlier this year; the AI company Wonderful did the same to $5 billion in under six months. TRM’s jump, from $1 billion in February to $2 billion now, moves on a similar clock.

Where the growth claim meets a live lawsuit

TRM’s pitch leans heavily on its government footprint, but one of its largest known federal contracts is currently contested. In July, Immigration and Customs Enforcement awarded TRM a $94.66 million, no-bid contract to support a Department of Homeland Security cyber unit through June 2027. Chainalysis, TRM’s top rival, sued in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims that same month, arguing ICE tailored the award’s requirements to match TRM’s products and gave Chainalysis only three days and a single page to respond to a much longer brief.

TRM has intervened in the case to defend the award. Oral arguments were held September 2, and the judge had been asked to rule by September 10; no decision had been issued as of this piece’s publication. Neither TRM nor ICE has commented publicly on the suit.

The court hasn’t said when it will rule. If it strikes down the ICE award, or forces a new competition, that removes one of the government wins TRM is currently citing to justify a valuation that just doubled without a disclosed new funding round.
