India Begins Tokenizing Its $620 Billion Corporate Bond Market

  • India’s corporate bond market, valued near $620 billion, is the target of a new tokenization pilot.
  • Settlement is designed to run through India’s central bank digital currency, the digital rupee.
  • The push follows the securities regulator’s earlier Bond Central portal, built to centralize corporate bond data.

India has begun piloting tokenized settlement for its corporate bond market, a market valued near $620 billion, using the digital rupee, the central bank digital currency the Reserve Bank of India has been developing since its pilot phase began. The idea is straightforward even if the plumbing behind it is not: instead of a bond trade settling through the usual multi-day chain of custodians, clearing corporations and registrars, ownership and payment would both move on the same digital rail, at the same time.

What Tokenized Settlement Actually Changes

Bond settlement today separates two things that tokenization tries to fuse: the transfer of the security and the transfer of the cash paying for it. That gap is why settlement takes days rather than seconds, and why an entire industry of clearing corporations exists to guarantee neither side gets stranded if the other fails to deliver. A tokenized bond, settled against a central bank digital currency rather than commercial bank money, collapses that gap because both legs move on the same ledger in the same transaction. This is the same delivery-versus-payment principle regulators have chased for decades through faster settlement cycles; digital rupee settlement is a more direct route to it.

India’s Securities and Exchange Board of India has been building toward this for a while, having already launched a centralized Bond Central data portal for corporate debt. A tokenization pilot is a logical next step once bond data itself is centralized and standardized, since tokenizing an asset that different registrars describe inconsistently is a much harder problem than tokenizing one with a single clean data source behind it.

The Scale Question That Actually Matters

The $620 billion figure is the size of the addressable market, not the size of the pilot. Central bank digital currency settlement pilots in bond markets elsewhere have typically started with a narrow slice of issuance, often a single tranche or a handful of participating banks, before any move toward market-wide adoption. The real story to watch is not the headline number but the pace at which the pilot’s participant list grows and whether commercial banks are willing to hold digital rupee balances at the scale bond settlement actually requires, since a settlement rail only works once enough of the market is plugged into it to make netting and liquidity efficient.
