Ethereum’s core developers confirmed activation dates for the network’s upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade this week, the latest step in Ethereum’s ongoing series of scheduled improvements aimed at scaling the network and reducing costs for rollups and other layer 2 chains built on top of it.

In the same announcement, developers warned that so-called fake builders have shown up on Ethereum’s public testnet in numbers large enough that they could stall the chain if the behavior isn’t addressed before Glamsterdam reaches mainnet. To understand why this matters, it helps to know how Ethereum blocks actually get built today. Validators who are chosen to propose a block generally outsource the actual construction of that block to specialized entities called builders, who compete to assemble the most profitable set of transactions and pay the validator for the right to have their block included. A fake builder is one that wins that competition, typically by promising an unusually high payment, but then fails to actually deliver a valid block when the time comes.

When that happens, the network loses the slot entirely rather than falling back to a real block, which can create gaps in block production if the behavior becomes frequent enough. Developers have said the issue appears to be a testnet-specific exploit of the builder auction mechanism rather than a flaw that has affected Ethereum’s mainnet, where real economic stakes make the same behavior far more costly to attempt.

Developers have not said the fake-builder issue will delay Glamsterdam’s confirmed activation dates, only that a fix needs to be finalized and tested before the upgrade goes live on mainnet. Ethereum’s engineering teams have historically treated builder-market integrity as a high priority, since any instability there ripples directly into how reliably the network can process transactions during the upgrade window.

Ethereum’s developer community has faced similar builder-market integrity questions before, including past incidents involving malfunctioning or exploitative maximal-extractable-value bots, and has generally responded by tightening the technical requirements builders must meet to participate in block auctions. Developers have indicated a similar tightening is likely here, potentially requiring builders to post a bond or meet stricter uptime and reliability standards before their bids are accepted, though the exact mechanism has not been finalized publicly ahead of Glamsterdam’s confirmed activation window.
