- Uniswap Labs launched the VolatilePair Hook on October 14, 2026, a Uniswap v4 dynamic-fee hook live on Ethereum mainnet starting with the ETH/USDC pool
- The hook recalculates separate buy-side and sell-side fees on every swap based on recent price movement, aiming to let liquidity providers keep more of the value they create
- Uniswap says volatile pairs like ETH/USDC did more than $500 billion in trading volume on the protocol this year, making fee design for this category especially consequential
Uniswap Labs introduced the VolatilePair Hook on October 14, 2026, a new tool built on the Uniswap v4 protocol’s hook architecture that dynamically adjusts trading fees for pairs whose prices move significantly rather than trading around a relatively fixed value. The hook went live immediately on Ethereum mainnet, starting with the ETH/USDC pool, one of the most heavily traded pairs on the entire protocol.
The problem the hook targets is a structural one for liquidity providers in volatile pairs. Under a traditional static-fee model, a pool quotes the same trading fee regardless of whether the market price of an asset like ETH has just moved sharply on other exchanges. When that happens, the pool keeps quoting its old price for a brief window, and fast-moving traders can buy the now-underpriced asset from the pool and capture the difference before the pool’s price catches up, a dynamic that effectively transfers value away from liquidity providers and toward the traders able to react fastest to price moves elsewhere.
VolatilePair Hook addresses this by calculating separate fees for buying and selling on every single swap, using recent price movement as an input. When the pool’s price has recently risen, buying the appreciating asset becomes more expensive while selling it becomes cheaper, and the relationship flips when price has recently fallen. In practice, this means that immediately after a sharp price move, a trade that pushes the pool’s price back toward where the broader market already sits faces a temporarily elevated fee, specifically targeting the kind of fast arbitrage trading that previously extracted value from liquidity providers caught with stale pricing.
Uniswap says the stakes for getting this fee design right are substantial: volatile trading pairs like ETH/USDC have generated more than $500 billion in trading volume on Uniswap this year alone, meaning even modest improvements in how much value liquidity providers retain from that volume can translate into meaningful aggregate gains across the protocol. The new hook follows a related but distinct tool, the StablePair Hook launched in September 2026 for stable-to-stable trading pairs, which Uniswap says processed $3.1 billion in volume within its first four weeks of operation.
VolatilePair Hook joins StablePair Hook and Permissioned Pools as part of a growing suite of specialized hooks Uniswap Labs has rolled out under the v4 architecture, which allows pool behavior and fee logic to be customized and upgraded through Uniswap Governance without requiring liquidity providers to migrate their positions to an entirely new pool. The announcement, published on the Uniswap Labs blog, said builders and token issuers interested in custom hooks of their own can contact Uniswap Labs directly, and that more hooks are planned following VolatilePair’s launch.
