The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday that consumer prices rose 0.1% in July, pulling annual inflation down to 3.4% from June’s 3.5%. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, increased 0.2% for the month after holding flat in June, and eased to 2.5% year over year from 2.6%.

Metric June 2026 July 2026
Headline CPI (year over year) 3.5% 3.4%
Headline CPI (month over month) -0.4% 0.1%
Core CPI (year over year) 2.6% 2.5%
Core CPI (month over month) 0.0% 0.2%

Shelter costs rose 0.1% in July and made up roughly two thirds of the monthly increase in the all-items index, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics release. Shelter is up 3.2% over the past year and remains the largest single driver of core inflation even as its monthly pace slows.

Energy fell 1.5% for the month but is still up 14.7% over the past year, with gasoline prices 24.6% higher than a year ago. Food rose 0.1%, and food away from home rose 0.3%. Medical care, airline fares, communication, education and recreation costs all increased in July. Motor vehicle insurance was among the categories that fell.

A Fed Already Split on How Close Is Close Enough

Date Event Why It Matters
July 13, 2026 Christopher Waller says policymakers need several months of positive inflation readings before trusting that disinflation is durable. Sets a higher bar for confidence in the inflation trend.
July 14, 2026 Kevin Warsh tells lawmakers the Fed has “no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation.” Signals continued concern over inflation staying above target.
August 2026 The July employment report shows an unexpected loss of jobs. Weak labor-market data complicates the Fed’s policy decision ahead of September.
August 12, 2026 July CPI rises 0.1% month over month; core CPI rises 0.2%. Annual headline CPI falls to 3.4% and core CPI to 2.5%. Adds another inflation reading without resolving the policy debate.
September 2026 The Fed’s next meeting will come after another employment report and any additional inflation data. Those readings will provide the next test of the competing views on disinflation.

The report lands a week after a July employment report showed an unexpected loss of jobs, a result that had already pushed traders to trim their bets on a Federal Reserve rate increase in September. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh told lawmakers on July 14 that the central bank has “no tolerance for persistently elevated inflation.” Governor Christopher Waller said a day earlier that policymakers would need “several months of positive readings” before trusting that disinflation is durable. July’s data adds one more data point without settling that disagreement.

Bitcoin’s Contained Reaction

Bitcoin was trading near $64,000 as the CPI release approached, while Ether was near $1,900, according to CoinMarketCap. The muted response stands out against the larger moves Bitcoin has made around several inflation releases this year.

CPI Release Bitcoin Reaction
February 2026 -5.77%
March 2026 +8.41%
April 2026 -4.00%
May 2026 -27.60%
June 2026 +3.60%
July 2026 +1.02%

June’s report, for example, helped push the market’s implied odds of a September Federal Reserve rate increase from 43% to 13%. Bitcoin subsequently rose 3.6% over 24 hours to nearly $64,800. July’s inflation data, which broadly matched forecasts, produced no comparable move.

The next test comes before the Fed’s September meeting, when another jobs report and any further inflation data will weigh against Warsh’s and Waller’s competing reads on how close the disinflation trend really is to holding.
