Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group announced on Aug. 13 that it will test settling Japanese government bond repo trades on blockchain. The test uses Digital Asset’s Canton Network to synchronize the bond and cash legs of a trade in real time, replacing the one- to three-day settlement window market participants use today.
Four MUFG entities are running the test:
- MUFG Bank
- Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities
- Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking
- The Parent Group
Digital Asset supplies the Canton infrastructure. Progmat, which already oversees about ¥452 billion in publicly offered security tokens, is handling market practice and product design. Secured Finance AG is building the smart contract layer that automates the repo lifecycle, including rate setting, maturity tracking, and collateral management.
They stay in Japan’s existing book-entry transfer register, the system that already records legal ownership. What moves onto Canton is the settlement instruction: the blockchain synchronizes that register with a digital payment leg, either a tokenized bank deposit or a stablecoin, so the bond and the cash change hands at the same moment. “Given their high creditworthiness and liquidity, JGBs are widely used as collateral for repo transactions by market participants in Japan and overseas, and momentum for bringing them onchain is growing,” MUFG said in its announcement. The test was selected in February under Japan’s Financial Services Agency Payment Innovation Project, a pilot program for new payment infrastructure.
A Second Route Into the Same Network
MUFG’s solo test is not its only path into this market. Since May, MUFG has also belonged to a separate seven-member working group, alongside:
- Mizuho Bank
- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation
- State Street Trust and Banking
- SBI Securities
- Japan Exchange Group
- BlackRock Japan
Pursuing a similar goal: tokenizing JGB collateral and pairing it with a stablecoin cash leg for fully onchain repo trades, further supporting the Canton Network expansion into Japan’s institutional financial markets. That group is aiming at the same market, Japan’s ¥250 trillion to ¥270 trillion JGB repo market, and its comprehensive report is due in October. Zenith, a blockchain infrastructure provider that joined the group in June, says it is building an Ethereum-compatible execution layer for Canton to support that work. MUFG’s own vendor and the working group’s vendor are converging on the same underlying network through two different technical routes.
| Track | Lead entities | What it targets | Stage as of Aug. 13, 2026 | Key date |
| MUFG JGB repo test | MUFG Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, MU Trust & Banking, Digital Asset, Progmat, Secured Finance AG | Onchain settlement of the bond and cash legs of a repo trade | Proof of concept, no completion date disclosed | Announced Aug. 13, 2026 |
| Tokenized JGB On-Chain Repo Working Group | MUFG, Mizuho, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, State Street Trust & Banking, SBI Securities, JPX, BlackRock Japan, Zenith | Tokenized JGB collateral plus stablecoin cash leg for fully onchain repo | Working group phase | Formed May 2026, report due Oct. 2026 |
| BOJ reserve settlement sandbox | Bank of Japan | Blockchain settlement of bank reserves at the central bank | Experimental, ahead of a digital yen decision | Announced Mar. 3, 2026 |
One Track Not Touching Canton
A third Japanese institution is working on an adjacent piece of the same puzzle without, on the evidence available, touching Canton at all. The Bank of Japan said on March 3 that it would experiment with blockchain settlement of the reserves banks hold at the central bank, a step tied to a decision expected later this year on a wholesale digital yen.
That is a central bank payment system question, not a bond settlement one, and nothing in the public record on it mentions Canton, MUFG’s test, or the working group.
MUFG’s Blockchain Push Builds Across Multiple Fronts
This is not an isolated move for MUFG. Since launching a digital-asset services unit in October 2025, the bank has put out a blockchain or tokenization announcement roughly every two to three months:
- December: MUFG announced a tokenized investment trust collaboration.
- March: MUFG completed its own Realty Token security token.
- June: MUFG launched a live three-way stablecoin with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mizuho, adding to the development of Japan stablecoin payments.
- August: MUFG announced the JGB repo onchain settlement test.
| Date | Announcement |
| Oct. 9, 2025 | MUFG launches a digital-asset services unit |
| Dec. 4, 2025 | Tokenized investment trust infrastructure collaboration |
| Feb. 2026 | MUFG selected under the FSA’s Payment Innovation Project |
| Mar. 3, 2026 | BOJ announces its blockchain reserve settlement sandbox |
| Mar. 4, 2026 | MUFG’s Realty Token completed |
| May 2026 | Tokenized JGB On-Chain Repo Working Group formed |
| Jun. 10, 2026 | MUFG, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho launch a live joint stablecoin |
| Aug. 13, 2026 | MUFG announces the JGB repo onchain settlement test |
What would show whether Japan’s institutions are converging on one piece of settlement infrastructure, rather than building parallel and possibly redundant paths toward it, is the working group’s report due in October and whether MUFG folds its solo test into that group’s work or keeps running it separately. The development also comes as Visa joins Canton Network, highlighting the network’s growing presence among global financial and payments institutions.
