Coinbase began rolling out 24/5 trading in nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks to eligible UK users on August 6, allowing British customers to buy, sell, and manage American equities within the same app they already use for cryptocurrency trading.

Every Coinbase UK user can now trade US stocks, and crypto in one single app.

The mechanics: zero commission, fractional shares starting at £1, and funding available in either pounds sterling or USDC. Trades can be funded instantly with either GBP or USDC, meaning existing stablecoin balances can go straight into a stock purchase without a separate conversion step first.

Bitcoin is now just 12% of Coinbase’s revenue

Here’s the number the launch announcement doesn’t mention: Coinbase disclosed on its Q2 earnings call that Bitcoin-related transactions made up only about 12% of total company revenue last quarter, down from more than half historically. That’s the diversification Coinbase has been building toward, and it’s happening because the core business needs it to.

Monthly Transacting Users fell to 7.6 million in Q2 2026, down from 8.7 million a year earlier, and total revenue came in at $1.22 billion, down 14% from the previous quarter and below Wall Street’s $1.29 billion forecast. The company posted a net loss of $359 million for the quarter.

A closer look at the timing complicates the easy read, though. Coinbase’s UK equities permissions trace back to a Financial Conduct Authority investment-services authorization the company secured around July 7, 2026, roughly four weeks before this launch and about three weeks before the Q2 earnings miss landed on July 30. A brand-new, regulated equities product doesn’t get built and shipped in six days. The more plausible read: this launch was already queued behind the license, not summoned as a distraction once the numbers came in.

The UK launch fits a pattern Coinbase calls the “Everything Exchange”

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong laid out three priorities for 2026, doubling down on turning the platform into an “everything exchange” spanning crypto, equities, prediction markets, commodities, stablecoins, and Base. This launch is one more line item against that list: the same playbook applied to a new jurisdiction.

Date Milestone
January 2026 Armstrong sets the “Everything Exchange” as a top company priority for the year
February 2026 Coinbase launches 24/5 stock trading nationally in the US, paired with a Yahoo Finance integration
~July 2026 Coinbase secures UK FCA investment-services authorization, covering equities and derivatives
July 30, 2026 Coinbase reports Q2 2026 earnings: revenue miss, Monthly Transacting Users down, Bitcoin down to ~12% of revenue
August 6, 2026 Coinbase launches 24/5 US stock trading for UK users

Coinbase’s UK country manager, Keith Grose, tied the move to that same broader ambition, saying it advances the goal of bringing traditional and onchain finance together in one place, and calling U.S. equities “some of the hottest capital markets for investors currently in the AI boom”.
