Julian Ma Leaves Ethereum Foundation After Four Years

The Ethereum Foundation saw the resignations of two senior researchers on Monday as Julian Ma and Carl Beek announced their departures from the organization. Julian Ma ended his four-year tenure at the Ethereum Foundation. During his time at the organization, he contributed to Ethereum’s censorship-resistant properties, cross-layer bridge algorithms, and strategic initiatives.

I want to be closer to or at an application of Ethereum’s properties and at a place where product and growth are the most important functions of the org.

The EF is an amazing place but not right for my next steps 🙂

In a post on X, Ma said he decided to leave the Ethereum Foundation to focus on product and growth-related work. Ma stated that he wanted to work closer to applications built on Ethereum’s infrastructure and in organizations where product and growth are central priorities.

He described the Ethereum Foundation as “an amazing place” but said it was not aligned with his next steps.

He also highlighted several projects he worked on during his tenure, including FOCIL, Fast Confirmation Rule go-to-market strategy, and broader ecosystem strategy initiatives. According to Ma, his recent work focused on product and growth efforts tied to Ethereum infrastructure and market strategy. He said he plans to explore ideas related to financial infrastructure built through crypto technologies.

“I have decided to leave the Ethereum Foundation. I’m very grateful to have worked with so many talented and inspiring people on an incredibly important project over the past four years. I’m proud of the work we’ve done,” Julian Ma said.

Carl Beek Announces Departure Effective May 29

After 7 incredible years, I’ve decided that Friday May 29th will be my last day at the Ethereum Foundation.

“After 7 incredible years, I’ve decided that Friday May 29th will be my last day at the Ethereum Foundation,” Carl Beek Said.

Carl Beek also announced that May 29 will be his final day at the Ethereum Foundation, ending a seven-year tenure with the organization. Beek contributed to multiple Ethereum-related initiatives, including the KZG ceremony and the early architecture of the Beacon Chain, which introduced proof-of-stake to Ethereum.

In his statement, Beek reflected on joining the Ethereum ecosystem at the age of 23 and thanked researchers, developers, Ethereum Foundation staff members, and the broader community. He stated that he plans to spend time with his wife and their 1-month-old child before deciding on his next professional steps. Beek added that he intends to work on projects focused on engineering, large-scale economic activity, and useful products in the future.

Ethereum Foundation Continues to See High-Profile Exits

The departures of Ma and Beek add to a broader series of exits at the Ethereum Foundation in recent months. In April, team manager Josh Stark announced his departure from the organization. Earlier in February, Tomasz Stanczak resigned from his role as co-executive director after serving for less than a year. Some specialists associated with the Ethereum Foundation have also moved to external projects during the same period. The latest resignations bring the number of high-profile departures from the Ethereum Foundation to at least eight in recent months, including five senior developers and researchers who left in May alone.

The departures of Julian Ma and Carl Beek add to a growing number of high-profile exits from the Ethereum Foundation in recent months. Both researchers played roles in key Ethereum initiatives, including censorship resistance research, bridge strategy, the Beacon Chain, and proof-of-stake development. While Ma said he plans to focus on product and growth-related opportunities tied to Ethereum applications, Beek stated that he will take time with his family before deciding on his next steps.

Their exits continue a broader period of organizational transition at the Ethereum Foundation, where several senior developers, researchers, and executives have departed this year. Recently, Ethereum introduced the “Clear Signing” initiative to improve transaction transparency by replacing complex transaction data with human-readable explanations. Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake recently introduced the “Strawmap,” a draft long-term framework outlining possible Layer-1 upgrades and Ethereum’s scalability, security, and privacy goals through 2029.
